Slab Building & Press Moulding are sculptures made in ceramics which I found to be an interesting way to create a work of art in abstraction. I will now talk you through step by step on how to create both sculptures.
Slab Building
To slab build I firstly rolled out clay using guides 1 cm thick. I then cut out and measured 4 squares each 11 cm width by 24 cm. Looking through my abstract book I used shapes and created more shapes on each separate square. The image I used was an image I created in Photoshop during graphics. I collaborated 2 sculptures by Joan Miro. This then formed shapes in themselves. Picking out shapes already in the image I took them a step further and added more small versions of these. I did this by using the stamp tool. I cross hatched the edges and added slip joining each of the edges together. to make it come together as one. Forming a cuboid.
Press Mould
Press moulding was a whole new process to me. A new and exciting feel to abstract in ceramics.A class mate of mine helped me build and form a sculpture with many interesting shapes and textures to it creating abstract movement. To do this we each cut out shapes using a variety of templates and tools to add depth and pattern. We each hope to add a splash of colour to this by adding glaze to it after it has been fired in the kiln.
