Out of all of my recent projects I found Homage to books the most challenging of all. In this project I had the option to explore and respond to books and words in my own style. There was a wide range of options to focus on, not just reading a book and working from it. The other options varied from illustrations from a book to stamps and typography. In order to respond in great depth my task's was to work in a certain technique and theme. My task's were set on:
- 3 colours (work using only these colours)
- 3 A1 sheets
- 3 drawing materials
- 3 photographs
- 3 outcomes
- 3 materials
My final chosen idea was to simply work from a favourite book of mine to keep it simple and hope that during my progress I would have produced something completely out of mind and plan. My chosen book was called MirrorMask. I chose this book as It is based around fantasy, illustrations and a touch of surrealism. This involved characters with a strange look to them. Odd masks were worn and robots had been turned into musical dolls. These characters had an exciting humor and lived in a city full of flying objects. I have always been a fan of movies and have never looked into any interest behind reading books. This book however may have changed my opinion as I found the book to be more exciting that the movie.
As photography is one of my specialties I chose to show you 2 outcomes of mine that I feel represented this series of work in the best way possible.
The first photograph shows my obvious term of what comes to mind when I think "MirrorMask", a mask in mirror. This is long nosed venetian mask that I had bought a while back in Venice, Italy. I have a series of mask's and I knew this mask would be the best suited to my subject. I see masks in MirrorMask that are shaped similar to this only I find this to be more bizarre and creepy, referring to the long nose. It is also the most famous mask known in Venice and in art history. I feel this adds potential.
The next photograph was designed around clocks. As I came across illustrations in the book I came across a robotic music doll with a clock attached to the side of it's head which rather amused me.
This is what inspired me to photograph a range of different clocks. I composed this to show a range of clocks which could be seen more in this movie. My Dali inspired melting clock drew the most attention to me. They are sat on top of a number of pieces of old paper from a book. I chose to blue tack these to my shelf for it to look as if the shelf was covered in a literal wallpaper. Could it be a shelf even?
I came across this book artist on a website called pinterest. As I was on this website I unfortunately, could not find any information on who it was by and other basics. I feel disappointed by this as I found this piece of work to be magnificent. This person has managed to form an art piece using portraiture and books collaborated into one subject by itself. They have managed to bring a great deal of depth and emotion from a fine artist's term into something that is just words and reading. The lighting on this is beautiful as it has come together in the perfect spots where shading is needed. When I look deeply into this, or just a glimpse even, I do not see this as a book but I see it as a sculpture as it is looking so realistic. The one thing I could criticise is the fact that the face for me would be too much of a distraction from the reading the book. However, if it was cut out of a book which may be considered as not interesting then it is perfectly fine to change it into something new, different and exciting.
I have been inspired by outcomes like this more in my book than anything else as I like to work on grounds. By drawing on top of a page in a book that page of words immediately changes to a background. The main focus then becomes the drawn outcome in the centre of the page with the words flowing behind it.
