Zombie doll mask

The true identity is shown.

The outfit.

This reminds me of The Wizard Of Oz.

Final Outcomes

As I have been looking at both doll's and mask's it was one of my greatest ideas to collaborate them both as one. This time around I took it that step further and really created that surreal image that I have always wanted.
Before creating this documentary piece I knew who I would have to be my model. That being my friend Jasmine. I wanted to include her as I see her as an odd creature herself and wanted her to play off the role of a caring monster. She has been in my work in the past and have played off the characters to its expected extent. I wanted to base my work around a sympathetic story line to show that there is more to what meets the eye. Meaning that however the appearance there is always great emotion hidden deep within.
My first thoughts that went into this was how do I build this character and what would be the story behind it.
My character was a living doll who had come back from the dead (this making it a zombie doll) to re-visit her babies and to spend that one last moment with them in her cherished home. To make her look realistic I used blue body paint in order to blend in well with the pale blue deadly like colour effect in the skin of the mask. Once the body paint had dried it showed a hint of texture peeling through which I thought was great as it made the character and body look more realistic as it gave off that deadly effect.
The location of this shoot was taken in an old ruined garage in the lane near by my house. I chose it to be set here as it had lots of urban decay that related to how I would imagine this characters home would look. The main objects to this was a large mattress and a child's green plastic chair that is broken. This goes to show that the home she once lived in was not looked after but it was a home to raise her babies.
When she had come back and risen from the dead she had made sure to look after her babies especially the one who she is in a separate photo with holding it in her arms. She is special to her and different to the rest as she is a musical doll and plays music to her mother and the others to fall asleep.
When taking the photos I thought deeply into composition and I had Jasmine sat on a white blanket (my blanket from when I was a baby myself) with my china dolls surrounding her showing their love for her.
When thinking into costume I wanted to dress my human sized doll up in a Victorian styled dress in order to match my other china dolls. I chose a white lace tutu dress as the light colour shines out and bounces off the blue body with dark dolly shoes to match.
I find a doll to be used as a mask is genius as a doll is not realistic but its appearance is very much so. I think this may come down to one of the reasons to why people are afraid of china dolls are they are built so realistically that people have intense images built in their head that they would come to life. Me however, I see them as beautiful dolls that represent a childhood. Although these are decorative porcelain dolls and not playful they are still dolls and when I think of the reasons behind dolls I think of parenting.  Dolls have been used in peoples childhood as ways for a young one to feel like they have a baby to look after.  They see how their mother is with them and feel inspired to have a baby of their own to care for like they're being cared for.  A good reference to this is the movie Toy Storey 3. This is a family orientated movie that shows both evil and nice toys with signs of friendship.
As china dolls are known to be some peoples fears I wanted to create a scene where it shows emotion behind it using a surreal character.
The moving pictures are taken unexpectedly as I quickly zoomed in and out with the camera lens and took the picture as I asked Jasmine to make quick movements. These pictures have become separate to my first ones as it shows more signs of a horror movie and are less sympathetic. I asked my friend Jasmine to walk around the garage and to slightly take her mask off trying to capture that it is actually a mask and to capture the revealing of a human being hidden behind a monster.
In these pictures my aim was to frighten my audience and to create someones deepest nightmare through the use of photography.
After my finished pieces were complete I later on realized that they actually look like a cover of a horror movie which made me feel delighted all the more.
The mask is made out of latex with a number of different shades of blue with deep carved in textures.
